Harridge Residence is a modern residential estate design, consists of a series of stacked volumes, appearing to cascade down the hillside creating a variety of outdoor terraces showcasing the 180-degree view from Downtown Los Angeles to Westwood. Located at the end of a ridge above two steep canyons, this home straddles a natural ridgeline at the end of a narrow street creating a threshold between the public street and the private space beyond. The design implements both transparency and opacity to carefully curate the entry procession, capturing breathtaking views while selectively screening others. These volumes, composed of heavy concrete walls, are countered by full height glass openings and delicately louvered wood screens.
Water features and landscaping are strategically placed amongst the volumes softening the experience of transitioning through the spaces with rippling sound, subtle reflection, and natural beauty. These design elements and materials combine to provide balance between the public and private realms of the residence. The conceptual stratification of the design intentionally assigns a different programmatic need to each of the multiple levels. The entry level hosts the formal entertaining space; with the kitchen, dining, great room, and separate guest suite all providing direct access to the poolside terrace. This level proposes a model for indoor / outdoor living with all spaces utilizing sliding glass panel walls that serve to challenge the distinction of what is interior and exterior space.
The upper level is dedicated to the Master bedroom suite and accessed is by a feature stair that gracefully winds up a double height glass volume. This level has exclusive 180-degree views of the city whether inside the bedroom or bathroom or on the exterior deck; accessing the spa and private rooftop garden. The suite is the perfect blend between indoor and outdoor relaxation. The lower level is primarily comprised of three gracious bedrooms, each with their own private bath opening onto a secluded, planted terrace. The rooms converge onto and reinforce an intimate family gathering space. The basement level is organized around informal entertainment and other amenities including a Bar, wine cellar/lounge, two-lane bowling alley, a 20 seat movie theater, game area, media lounge, and wellness center that includes a full gym, massage, sauna, and steam room.
