Modern New Orleans House

Nestled in a New Orleans enclave of stately Victorians, a modernist gem proves to be the ideal home for architect Lee Ledbetter. Architect Lee Ledbetter renovated a landmark 1963 house in New Orleans to share with his partner, Douglas Meffert. A courtyard is outfitted with vintage William Haines lounge chairs cushioned in a Holly Hunt fabric, a travertine-top Haines cocktail table, and a 1950s dining set by Mauricio Tempestini for Salterini, all from Point Five in San Antonio. The early-20th-century Alaskan totem pole is original to the house; the landscaping was designed by Luis Guevara.

The shape of the original terrazzo terrace off the dining room is echoed in a 1960 Richard Schultz cocktail table for Knoll; the vintage Knoll chairs are Harry Bertoia designs.

A 1984 George Dunbar painting is installed in the breakfast room, which contains barstools by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller and a Pierre Jeanneret Scissor chair for Knoll.

The kitchen has original walnut cabinetry and Toastmaster warming drawers, Caesarstone counters, a Miele dishwasher, Blanco sink fittings, and a Phillip Jeffries grass-cloth wall covering.

In the dining room, original Raak globe pendants hover above Napoléon III painted side chairs from Lucullus Antiques and a Saarinen table. A photograph by Jungjin Lee hangs on a wall clad in a Phillip Jeffries grass cloth, while an Eva Hild sculpture rests on the dining table and Peter Lane ceramic sculptures are showcased on a George Nelson storage system original to the house.

A sitting room includes vintage William Haines swivel chairs from Dragonette, a 1950s T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings cocktail table, a Paul Frankl sofa in a Donghia silk-mohair, and a mixed-media piece by Peter Lane adjacent to a collection of photography.

A pair of Hiroshi Sugimoto photographs surmount the master suite’s original walnut bed by George Nelson for Herman Miller, now reupholstered in a Gretchen Bellinger mohair; the 1970s Milo Baughman stools are covered in a Fortuny cotton, and the photograph on the side wall is by Adam Fuss.

Surrounding the custom-made cocktail table in the living room are a pair of Harvey Probber brass armchairs upholstered in a KnollTextiles fabric, two Louis XVI–style fauteuils in a Holly Hunt leather, a vintage T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings chair in a Zoffany stripe, and a vintage Florence Knoll sofa in a KnollTextiles Ultrasuede. A large mixed-media artwork by Robert Helmer hangs on the brick wall, which is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White.
